ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - How much does New York care about reading? According to a survey commissioned by the national teaching organization the American Reading Company, the answer is quite a bit. The American Reading Company has released the results of a survey conducted by YouGov, which consulted parents of children in school from kindergarten to 12th grade in New York, and asked for their views on how reading should be taught in schools. The majority of parents said they want their children to learn from reading curriculums that include lessons on phonics, texts with a grounding in history and science, and daily writing time.“Parents value strong reading skills and seek a curriculum with knowledge building and explicit phonics that helps set the stage for them to not just be strong readers but to develop a love of reading,” said Chris Melchiorre, Senior Vice President at YouGov. (NEWS10) --  The 24th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is set for Saturday, April 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This national day is hosted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and provides residents with a way to safely dispose of their unused medication. In 2022, the DEA and its partners collected about 684 tons of unwanted and unused drugs during the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day events.These events are held every April and October. State police seek tips in 2021 cold case homicide

LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Investigators with the Missouri State Highway Patrol are asking for the public's help in solving a cold case homicide.According to the MSHP's Division of Drug and Crime Control, Thomas Aldridge Sr. was found shot to death on Sept. 3, 2021, on Interstate 170 at Natural Bridge Road.A state trooper had responded to a call for a stranded motorist that afternoon and found Aldridge in the driver's seat of a 2017 Jeep Patriot. Denver District Attorney Beth McCann on Wednesday cleared three Aurora police officers of wrongdoing in the death of a man who shoplifted from a convenience store before eventually leading them on a chase that ended in the Pikes Peak Shuttle parking lot at Denver International Airport.Denver resident Abel Yohannes, 30, died Oct. 1 in a hail of police gunfire from multiple wounds following the chase, in which vehicles reached speeds as fast as 120 miles per hour, according to a case summary by investigators that McCann sent in a letter notifying Aurora Police Chief Art Acevedo.Aurora and Denver police got involved after receiving a report of a robbery at the 7-11 at 14490 East Colfax Ave. in Aurora shortly after midnight.
