LCRA enters Stage 2 drought response; asks water cutback of 10-20%

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Lower Colorado River Authority said Monday it entered the second stage of drought response and asked water customers to cut back water use. The agency said the combined storage in Lakes Travis and Buchanan, the two water supply reservoirs in the Highland Lakes, fell below 900,000 acre-feet over the weekend. That is about 46% of capacity. An acre-foot is 326,000 gallons of water. LCRA said it asked all firm water customers (municipalities, water districts and industries) reduce use by 10%-20% and implement mandatory water restrictions.“We have enough water, but we don’t have enough water to waste,” said John Hofmann, LCRA executive vice president of Water.“The easiest and most direct way to reduce discretionary water use is to cut back on watering landscapes,” Hofmann said. “Individual homeowners have a responsibility to use water wisely and without waste,” he said. “A healthy yard needs less water than you may think. A man died after he was shot on St. Paul’s Raspberry Island Monday night.Police were called to the Mississippi River park across from downtown just after 9 p.m. on a report of a shooting. There had been a large group gathered, an altercation and shots fired, police said of preliminary information.Officers found a man with apparent gunshot injuries. Paramedics took him to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.Homicide investigators are working to determine what led to the shooting and who was responsible. Police didn’t announce arrests early Tuesday.Officers located possible witnesses Monday night and also asked anyone with information to call them at 651-266-5650.Police said they will release the victim’s name after the Ramsey County medical examiner’s office confirms his identity and cause of death.The man’s homicide was the 23rd of the year in St. Paul. ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. - Several military memorial plaques were stolen from Jefferson Barracks in South County.This happened at the Veteran's Memorial Amphitheater at Jefferson Barracks Park just off Bagby Road. Two plaques were originally reported stolen, but as of Tuesday morning, all five plaques for the different military branches are missing. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. - The city of St. Louis is now the sole provider of water for the city of St. Charles.The city of St. Charles has been dealing with a contamination problem with its water for quite some time, but Tuesday morning a key component - ammonia is missing from the water, and now the water treatment plant is shut down.The city of St. Charles has a total of seven drinking water wells at the Elm Point wellfield. The last operational well was number ten, but the city had to shut it down over the weekend because of a drop in the level of ammonia in raw water. Ammonia is used to disinfect the water.
