LeBron? Don’t care.CJ McCollum and Zion? Don’t care. SGA? Don’t care. Tim Connelly and his Walloping Wolves? Don’t care.Charles Barkley? Don’t care. Kendrick Perkins? Sooooo don’t care. Two words: Jamal Murray. If he’s great, or even just very, very good, nothing else matters when it comes to this Nuggets postseason. Not matchups. Not histories. Not demons. Not grudges. Not the noise. For Denver, the No. 1 seed who’ll inevitably be treated as a plucky inconvenience by a coastal NBA media machine who’d rather be hanging with King James, Kevin Durant or Steph Curry when the ratings come rolling in, this is the money stat:The Nuggets are 14-6 (.700) in postseason games since 2018 whenever Murray scores 20 points or more. They’re 2-11 (.154) when he doesn’t.That’s the kind of whopping, Jekyll-and-Hyde split that the Rockies usually put up when comparing their statistics at Coors Field to everywhere else on the planet. Cripes, the Nuggets are 8-4 (.667) when Murray goes for 25 points ...Berkeley: UC police arrest suspect in sexual batteries

BERKELEY — Police arrested a suspect Tuesday allegedly connected to a series of reported sexual batteries on and around the University of California campus, authorities said.In a statement, a UC Berkeley spokesman said the case looking into the unidentified suspect was complex and still under investigation, and did not share any information about what led to the arrest.“UCPD would like to thank those in the community who have come forward to report encounters with the sexual battery suspect who was described in several previous WarnMe messages,” the statement read in part. “Additional similar crimes that occurred over the last week have been reported.”According to one campus WarnMe system message Monday, which shared images of a possible suspect taken from surveillance-camera footage, female students were approached around 1:30 p.m. last Wednesday in the Eucalyptus Grove and around 9:40 a.m. Sunday near Stephens Hall.“In both cases, the suspect gr...Digging into SF Giants’ strikeout issues, and what they’re doing to address them

SAN FRANCISCO — The Giants were in a hole Monday night, down to the Dodgers late in their series opener. But after stringing together three straight singles to start the seventh inning, they had the bases loaded with no outs and seemed ready to strike. Instead, they struck out.Bryce Johnson went down swinging on a high heater. Thairo Estrada watched strike three paint the inside corner. Wilmer Flores managed to put the ball in play, but with two outs already, his fly ball to right only served as the third out of the inning. Just like that, the rally was over.If it seems like the Giants have been uniquely bad in these prime scoring situations, you’re not wrong. And if it seems like those rally-killing Ks are coming at a record rate, well, they are. Dating back to the start of last season, no team has struck out more in bases loaded, no outs situations, and through 10 games this year, the only two teams in MLB history to have struck out more to start a season (the 2018 and 2021 ...Judge in Oakland police oversight hearing avoids Armstrong controversy, seeks way forward

OAKLAND — The federal judge overseeing the Oakland Police Department didn’t have much interest Tuesday in discussing Chief LeRonne Armstrong, whose firing amid a misconduct scandal has ensured that he will not lift its oversight anytime soon.Instead, Judge William Orrick described how the cover-up of a police sergeant’s hit-and-run of a parked vehicle reflected a “cultural inability of the Oakland Police Department … to hold itself and its officers accountable without fear or favor.”The judge noted how the lack of accountability echoed “the same kind of problems” found in the infamous Riders brutality cases that first brought OPD under federal oversight two decades ago.“It’s this lack of integrity — this culture that plays favorites and protects wrongdoers — that undercuts the foundations of constitutional policing,” Orrick said. “And 20 years of court supervision hasn’t solved that problem, wh...Video shows officers under fire from Louisville bank shooter

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The California Legislature is weighing a proposal by Gov. Gavin Newsom to set aside $300 million for low-income schools. But some education advocates say it won’t do enough to improve educational outcomes for Black students.Assemblymember Akilah Weber, a Democrat from San Diego, introduced a bill last year aimed at ensuring more education money reaches Black students. But she pulled the bill after conversations with Newsom, citing concerns that it could violate the state or U.S. constitution because it focused on one specific racial group, even though it didn’t mention “Black” by name. The Democratic governor’s new approach, which Weber supports, instead targets money to schools with a high concentration of students who qualify for free lunch under a federal program.“This proposal is exactly what our state needs to work toward repairing the longstanding harms of inequity in education and ensuring our schools are more fair and accessible fo...Latest news
