With nine games left in the regular season, the Chicago Bulls were forced to ponder an unlikely question Friday night: Can they handle a final push for the play-in tournament without DeMar DeRozan?DeRozan missed Friday’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers as he continues to struggle with a right quadriceps and hip injury. The Bulls ultimately fared just fine without their All-Star, delivering a 124-96 blowout to a Trail Blazers team playing without Damian Lillard and Jusuf Nurkić. Zach LaVine made six 3-pointers and led the team with 33 points while Nikola Vučević supported with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Opinion: Save guns until 21. Save lives.

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:07:50 GMT

“Coming of age.” There is a reason we immediately understand the meaning of this phrase. Common sense, plus our memories of high school, remind us that some experiences are better reserved for later in life. We already prevent youth from buying and possessing alcohol and tobacco until age 21 because these restrictions save lives. Similarly,  allowing youth to buy and possess guns at the age of 18 takes lives. Why make this call? We see solid research about the delayed development of the human brain, particularly in areas that may alter a person’s likelihood of involvement in violence against themselves or others.Tragically, this research has been validated right here in Denver in two recent incidents:First, on Feb. 13, East High School soccer player Luis Garcia, 16, was shot while sitting in his car outside the high school. He died of his wounds on March 1. Other teenagers are suspected of being the killers, although no charges have been filed.Second, less than six weeks ...

Softball roundup: Pinole Valley stays perfect as Kailani Tatro strikes out 11

LAFAYETTE – Kailani Tatro struck out 11 batters, gave up just three hits, and finished the complete game with her and Pinole Valley’s 10th victory of the year. And somehow, the 5-2 victory over Acalanes could still be considered an “off game.”That’s how dominant Tatro, a senior pitcher with a knack for locating offspeed pitches, has been for the Spartans.“When I’m in the game, and my arm starts feeling tired, I just take a deep breath and rely on my spin,” Tatro said. “That’s what gets me through all the games.”It took until her 56th inning of the season for Tatro to surrender an earned run, the bottom of the sixth in Friday night’s cold and windy contest in Lafayette.LAFAYETTE – Acalanes infielder Hailey Stripling handles a ground ball. SAN JOSE — Tanner Kern was Archbishop Mitty’s last hope when he stepped into the batter’s box with two outs in extra innings Friday, his team trailing by a run on a blustery and cool spring afternoon. It certainly was not a time for the faint of heart, on either side, as the tying run stood at third, the winning run at second. At the plate was the left-handed-hitting Kern, who had just 10 plate appearances this season, the most recent as a pinch hitter an inning earlier.“I was just trying to help my team in the best way,” Kern said. “It just came out well. I just stuck with the Mitty approach and just did what I did.”What the junior did was hit a flyball toward the alley in left-center that dropped in for a double, knocking in both runners to lift Mitty — ranked No. 1 by the Bay Area News Group — to a 3-2, eight-inning victory over fourth-ranked Bellarmine in West Catholic Athletic League play.Mitty players spilled out of the dugou...
