ATLANTA — The last time the Mets were in Atlanta, they had their three best pitchers lined up to try and hold off the surging Braves for a chance to win the NL East. One by one, they all fell to the team that eventually won the division. It was Jacob deGrom’s final regular season appearance for the Mets, and though he kept the team’s title hopes alive with a Wild Card win over the San Diego Padres, ultimately, that was the end for the dominant, homegrown right-hander in New York. Now, the Mets are back in Atlanta, and they arrived just in time to find out that deGrom, now a member of the AL West-leading Texas Rangers, will have to undergo his second Tommy John surgery.“You feel awful for him,” Mets manager Buck Showalter said Tuesday at Truist Park. “I know how much it means for him to pitch and he enjoys pitching. It’s certainly sad news for all of us.”His former Mets teammates reached out right away.“I sent him a text and said t...Somerville students to be released for summer break on time even after concrete crumbled and closed their school

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Former Gov. Chris Christie made clear from the start that his campaign for the White House will not be the same as other Republicans, launching his run for the presidency with direct attacks on the leading conservative candidate, former President Trump.Where other GOP hopefuls have attempted to strike a very delicate balance — stuck somewhere between making clear that they should be the party’s pick to face President Biden in November of 2024, while not insulting the 45th president directly lest they alienate his MAGA-movement base — Christie launched his campaign with broad-ranging historical references to successful political leaders from the past and then promptly began an unapologetic assault on Trump’s record and public scandals.“A lonely, self-consumed, self-serving, mirror hog is not a leader,” he said. “So now we have pretenders all around us, who want to tell you ‘pick me, because I’m kind of like what you picked before...How long will the smoke last in Massachusetts? ‘It’s going to stick with us’ as state issues air quality advisory
