SEATTLE (AP) — J.P. Crawford lined a two-run double with two out in the ninth inning, lifting the Seattle Mariners to a 3-2 win over Texas on Thursday night and stopping the Rangers from clinching a playoff berth for at least one day.Seattle’s first three batters of the ninth reached against Aroldis Chapman (6-5) on two hits and a walk. Jonathan Hernández then came in and retired pinch-hitter Mike Ford on a fly ball to shallow center. Josh Rojas fouled out for the second out, also not deep enough for Cal Raleigh to score from third. But Crawford went the other way and drove a 1-1 pitch over the head of left fielder Evan Carter. Seattle also holds the tiebreaker over the Astros. For most of the night, it appeared as if the AL West-leading Rangers (89-70) would be celebrating.Adolis García hit his 39th ho...

Chicago Cubs are swept out of Atlanta with a 5-3 loss to the Braves — but they might not know their wild-card fate until Monday

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 09:17:58 GMT

The only outcome the Chicago Cubs could not allow to transpire against the Atlanta Braves this week at Truist Park was being a handed a three-game sweep. Two one-run losses, featuring a two-run error on a dropped fly ball by Seiya Suzuki in the opener and three blown saves in a 10-inning defeat in Game 2, and an underwhelming all-around performance in the series finale created a worst-case scenario for the Cubs and their postseason hopes. The Braves completed the sweep Thursday, handing the Cubs a 5-3 loss and complicating the North Siders’ path to securing the third National League wild-card position. The Cubs fell a half-game behind the Miami Marlins for the No. 3 spot, and the Marlins hold the tiebreaker on the North Siders. But leave it to Mother Nature to make things just a little more unclear. The Marlins-Mets game at Citi Field in New York was suspended at 11:58 p.m. CDT Thursday because of rain. The Mets led by a run entering the ninth before the Marlins rallied for a 2-1...

They say the money is needed to pay for more imported water and to maintain the city's water infrastructure. “Construction of a new Wohlford dam. That dam is 130 years old and so we need to replace that. That’s a very costly project,” said Escondido Deputy City Manager Christopher McKinney. However, some residents remain critical of the steep hike.“Increased the rates in 2012, increased rates in 2017 and where did that money go,” Otteson said.
