Restaurants have always been an important part of life for Yanika Yawikham.Growing up in Thailand, she spent her childhood at her grandparents’ restaurant. She attended school in a different town from where she lived and with few classmates nearby to play with, she would entertain herself by playing restaurant with her dolls and stuffed animals.After college, the then-21-year-old moved to the U.S. to work as a server at a cousin’s Thai restaurant, Siam Orchid in Orinda, where she met her now-husband, who was a frequent customer.The short rib khao soi at Zaya Thai Pantry in Danville is prepared in the Chiang Mai style with curry noodles, braised beef short ribs, crispy egg noodles and pickled greens, onions and chili oil. OAKLAND — The suspect in a $1 million arson at the Target in Emeryville has been released from jail on the condition he not possess ignitable materials or return to the store, court records show.Reuben Ramirez-Berg, 26, was released on his own reconnaissance last month by Judge James Cramer. He is next due in court in August for a preliminary hearing, where a judge will review the evidence against him and decide whether there’s enough for the case to proceed.Emeryville police allege that on around 2 p.m. on June 4, Ramirez-Berg entered the Target at 1555 40th Street in Emeryville carrying some items wrapped in a sheet, including a bottle of motor oil. He allegedly walked to the bedding section and ignited the items, then calmly purchased something with the self-checkout and walked out of the parking lot to his vehicle.Two days later, Ramirez-Berg was arrested in his Emeryville home, police say. Three days after a police dog’s AWOL adventure made headlines, another K9 officer has gone missing in the Fresno area.Kona, missing police dog. (Reedley Police Department) The police department in Reedley reported that one of its dogs, a German shepherd named Kona, escaped his handler’s garage in Visalia around 11 p.m. Tuesday. It is thought he was agitated by fireworks.The tracking device that had been on the dog’s collar was found in an area of orchards southeast of Visalia.Reedley police asked that anyone who sees Kona call them at (559) 637-4250. He is described as 80 pounds, sable in color and wearing a black nylon collar.On Saturday, a dog named Odin got out of the Fresno yard of his handler, a Madera County sheriff’s deputy, and was missing more than 18 hours. SAN JOSE — Property values in Santa Clara County soared at their fastest pace in six years during 2022, a hint that the area’s remarkable real estate market has yet to suffer long-term economic maladies from the coronavirus.Santa Clara County’s property tax roll jumped to an all-time record high of $619.95 billion in 2022, the Assessor’s Office reported.The value of the county’s property tax roll increased by 7.5% in 2022 compared with 2021, according to the county agency. (KRON) -- A suspect has been arrested in a stabbing that took place at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara Sunday night, police announced on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Alejandro Garcia-Villanueva, was arrested at his residence on July 4, Santa Clara PD said.Police used advanced video technology at Levi's Stadium and community input to identify the suspect and a person of interest in the case within 24 hours of the stabbing. An arrest warrant was issued for Garcia-Villanueva for attempted murder. (BCN) -- Fireworks ignited two homes in Antioch early Wednesday morning. The blaze destroyed an unattached garage between the homes, also destroying several cars and damaging both homes. Police investigating 5 incidents after violent night in Hayward Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman Steve Hill said the fire in the area of West Eighth and D streets was called in by members of both households at 2:52 a.m. and quickly went to a fire alarm. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 3:38 a.m. Hill said no injuries were reported. Both homes were occupied at the time of the fire, though everyone got out in time. Hill didn't have an estimate of how many people are displaced because of the fire.
