BERLIN — A man who joined German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s official convoy without authorization was on drugs, according to media reports. As Bild first reported, a driver entered Scholz’s motorcade on Wednesday evening while the leader was on his way to his government plane at Frankfurt Airport, after an appointment at the European Central Bank, and hugged him at the airport before bodyguards intervened. On Friday, a government spokesperson confirmed the report stating that for Scholz, “it was not a big incident in the specific situation, just a surprisingly intimate embrace.”The man, a 48-year-old Greek who lives in Hanau, had joined the motorcade — which was escorted by local police on motorcycles — around 10:30 p.m. in his private vehicle almost 20 kilometers from the airport, according to media reports. His car was able to pass through the airport’s security barrier together with the convoy, despite having unauthorized license plates. (CNN) — Using artificial intelligence, researchers say, they’ve found a new type of antibiotic that works against a particularly menacing drug-resistant bacteria. When they tested the antibiotic on the skin of mice that were experimentally infected with the superbug, it controlled the growth of the bacteria, suggesting that the method could be used to create antibiotics tailored to fight other drug-resistant pathogens. The researchers also tested the antibiotic against 41 different strains of antibiotic-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii. The drug worked on all of them, though it would need to be further refined and tested in human clinical trials before it could be used in patients. What’s more, the compound identified by AI worked in a way that stymied only the problem pathogen. It didn’t seem to kill the many other species of beneficial bacteria that live in the gut or on the skin, making it a rare narrowly targeted agent. If more antibiotics worked this precisely, the resea...Massachusetts Senate approves $55.9 billion budget proposal

(CNN) — Maryland’s Supreme Court on Thursday blocked the reinstatement of Adnan Syed’s murder conviction while it decides whether to hear his appeal in the long-running, twisted tale.Syed served more than 20 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, before prosecutors dropped all charges last September and Syed was released, years after the case was the focus of the “Serial” podcast.Prosecutors said they found new suspects and unreliable evidence had been used at Syed’s trial.Syed has remained free, but the case has grown even trickier. In February, the victim’s brother appealed the conviction being vacated. The brother said he hadn’t been given adequate notice of a court hearing and he asked an appeals court to reverse the reversal and do the hearing over again to determine whether the conviction should be reversed again. In March, a state appellate court reinstated Syed’s conviction after ruling a lower court had violated the rights...GOP-led Texas House to vote Saturday on possible impeachment of state Attorney General Ken Paxton
