Miss Manners: The bride punished me because I didn’t grant her request DEAR MISS MANNERS: Two dear friends married each other three months ago. I was invited to the wedding and so was my sister, along with our significant others. The wedding location was an hour’s drive away, so it made sense for us to carpool. The outdoor wedding — the ceremony itself, plus a celebration with ample food and beverage — was to start at 5 p.m. and end at 11 p.m. My sister is known for making brief appearances at parties, so the bride requested that my girlfriend and I drive separately. She explained that our attendance to the very end was important on her special day.As the bride knew, my girlfriend had recently had eye surgery, which made social events tiring. Against the bride’s request, we kept our plans to carpool and to leave before 11 p.m. We lasted until just after 9, at which time my girlfriend and my sister were exhausted, and we said farewell to the bride and groom. The bride seemed vexed by our “early” departure and asked me i...

Dear Abby: I’m married, but I want my new love to commit to me DEAR ABBY: I am married, but my wife and I are unhappy and have been for years. We grew apart after 17 years. We tried counseling multiple times; it only reinforces the decision to divorce. I have had two affairs. One lasted six months; the other on and off for the past nine months. The latter lady, “Gayle,” and I have an amazing connection in our lifestyles and beliefs. We even have the same birthday. It’s undeniable. We also have chemistry like no other. The problem is, she doesn’t think we will work. More than once, she has broken up with me, and then decided weeks later that she wanted to see me.I have professed my love for her and, while she hasn’t said it back, everything points to it. When we are intimate, she cries and tells me how much I mean to her.Gayle is strong-willed, independent and lives her life on her terms. When she makes a decision, it’s final. But not with me — she keeps coming back.I have written her numerous letters decl...

EU institutions snub Twitter’s paid blue-check verification plan  Twitter is this month unrolling its new paid-verification plan, but the European Union institutions are staying away from the controversial blue checks. The European Commission and European Parliament are not currently planning to pay Twitter to get their hundreds of official EU accounts — including those of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Parliament President Roberta Metsola — verified under the “Twitter Blue” program, according to the institutions’ press services. Reversing a previous policy that aimed to limit misinformation, Twitter said it will this month remove legacy blue checks that used to certify the authenticity of government officials, journalists and public figures’ accounts unless they pay. Meanwhile, any users could also soon be able to subscribe to get the once-coveted blue tick. Announced in November 2022 after Elon Musk bought the platform, the plan has sparked fears that it could result in a wave of fake accounts and an uptick in fake...

Orioles pitcher Grayson Rodriguez has small town roots. His friends and family prove that. Grayson Rodriguez is not from Houston. His mother, Temple, gets frustrated when she sees it written that her son is a Houston native.“Please tell them,” she pleaded. “He is not from Houston. He was just born there because I was high risk. He’s from Nacogdoches.”To some, the distinction might not seem important. Houston, about 140 miles south, is the closest major city in Texas to Nacogdoches. But the significance of noting that Rodriguez, the Orioles’ top pitching prospect, isn’t from Houston — population 2.28 million — and is instead from Nacogdoches — population 32,118 — was obvious Wednesday when he made his MLB debut in Texas against the Rangers. Seated behind the third base dugout for his first big league start were scores of Rodriguez supporters from Nacogdoches — family, friends and former teammates and coaches — all donning either Central Heights High blue or Orioles orange.“It was a lot of fun...
