Walgreens pushes back on California contract cancellation over abortion pill plans

Walgreens said Thursday that California Gov. Gavin Newsom is unfairly targeting the pharmacy over plans for dispensing abortion pills in other states that it says are no different than those of its competitors.Newsom this week said California “won’t be doing business with Walgreens — or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk” after the pharmacy indicated last week it would not dispense abortion pills 21 states where attorneys general warned they would consider it illegal.Newsom’s office Wednesday announced the state won’t renew a contract for “specialty pharmacy prescription drugs” mostly used by the state’s correctional health care system that has paid Walgreens $54 million as part of an ongoing “review of all contracts between the state and Walgreens.” Newsom said California will “will explore other options for furnishing the same services.”Walgreens said in a stat...Cal fires Mark Fox: Five candidates to revive a program adrift in changing college sports landscape

Cal dismissed coach Mark Fox on Thursday in a move surprising only in that it required 19 hours from the conclusion of the worst season in school history to the announcement of Fox’s termination. The writing has been on this wall since the invention of writing.Fox was a questionable hire from the start, as athletic director Jim Knowlton spent just three days looking for a replacement for Wyking Jones in the spring of 2019 and allowed an East Coast-based search firm, Collegiate Sports Associates, to guide the process despite its questionable track record for West Coast hires. The first red flag: Fox was unemployed at the time, having been fired by Georgia a year earlier. The second red flag: Fox had no ties to Cal.Every Bears fan in captivity — at least, those who haven’t been driven away by six dreadful years under Jones and Fox — should hope Knowlton doesn’t retain CSA this time around. Then again, Pete Newell at the peak of his powers would only get the Bears to medi...North Korea drill simulates an attack on South Korea

By Kim Tong-Hyung | Associated PressSEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a live-fire artillery drill simulating an attack on a South Korean airfield and called for his troops to be ready to respond to the enemies’ “frantic war preparation moves” — apparently referring to the U.S.’s largest military exercises with the South in years. The North Korean state media report Friday came a day after South Korea’s military detected the North firing at least one short-range ballistic missile toward the sea from a site near the western coastal city of Nampo. The South’s Joint Chiefs of Staff was assessing whether more missiles may have been launched from the area simultaneously.South Korea and the United States are preparing this month for their biggest combined military training exercise in years to counter the growing threat of Kim’s nuclear arsenal, which he has aggressively expanded despite the North’s deepening econ...Big storm barrels toward a Big Sur school shuttered by landslides for months

Since early January, Ellen Hall has been teaching in an empty classroom.Hall’s students have been popping in and out of her online lessons since storms rocked Big Sur — and led to massive landslides — on Highway 1 late last year. More than two months later, half of the students at Hall’s school are still blocked from their classes, separated by immense levels of dirt, muck and rock. The situation could get worse this weekend as a new atmospheric river barrels toward Big Sur, with forecasters calling for up to 14 inches of rain. For now, until everyone can get to the classroom, no students are allowed at the school. The landslide at Mill Creek on Feb. 16, 2023. (Photo courtesy of Caltrans District 5). The Biden administration included a major gift to the Bay Area in its Thursday federal budget proposal: $500 million to build BART through San Jose, a vital revenue boost to a project racked by escalating cost projections. The funding would bring the 6-mile extension, which is supposed to be finished by 2034, a major step closer to reality, although the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority still needs to close a multi-billion dollar gap between project costs and available funding.“It’s definitely significant,” said Carolyn Gonot, VTA’s general manager. “There were only a handful of projects that got very large sums in the president’s budget.”The $9.3 billion extension would have BART trains whizzing underneath downtown San Jose and into Santa Clara. But the cost and time estimates have doubled since 2018, and more recently the VTA turned to Washington asking for a historic $4.6 billion federal grant. So far, the Federal Transit Adminis...Texas executes inmate for killing 4 during drug robbery
