Weekend: scattered storms to start, near 100-degrees to finish AUSTIN (KXAN) -- One more round of scattered storms this weekend before our focus solely turns to dangerous heat.Today is expected to be the hottest day of the year so far with afternoon highs soaring well into the 90s. Austin's forecast high of 98° will run 5° hotter than normal for this time of year. MAP: Zebra mussels are now in 35 lakes across Texas AUSTIN (KXAN) — As the summer boating season ramps up, parks officials are urging boaters to take steps to prevent the further spread of zebra mussels across the state.The invasive species was first detected in Lake Texoma, north of Dallas, in 2009. Now, a total of 31 lakes are infested, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Two Texas zoos named among the best in the country Zebra mussels have also been detected in a further four lakes and are suspected in one more.Most of the infested lakes are clustered in central and north Texas. Last month, another lake was added to the infected list: Hords Creek Lake in Coleman County, south of Abilene.A single zebra mussel was found attached to dam infrastructure in the lake in April, TPWD said. Follow-up surveys found the presence of a reproducing population in the lake.There is one success story: Lake Waco. CapMetro granted $950,000 to improve safety through vehicle automation AUSTIN (KXAN) – The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration announced more than $11 million in grants for six transit bus automation research projects that will improve safety, efficiency, and accessibility on the road and in bus maintenance yards.CapMetro will get nearly $950,000 of that money to integrate vehicle automation in an advanced yard management system and run heavy-duty vehicle demonstrations at its operations facility, according to Thursday's announcement. The FTA said the CapMetro project will also include "a bus automation workforce analysis to address how bus yard automation may impact existing roles and create demand for new positions."The CapMetro project was one of six transit bus automation research projects the FTA was supporting with $11.6 million in grants, according to Thursday's announcement. APD: Man dies in June 1 auto-ped crash on Hwy 290 AUSTIN (KXAN) – Austin Police said Thursday a man died after being hit by a pick-up truck on the night of June 1. According to APD, the crash happened around 9:20 p.m. in the 6100 block of the eastbound service road of East U.S. Hwy. 290. That is just east of William Cannon Drive and Williamson Creek in southwest Austin. Police said the unidentified man died at the scene. The driver of the pick-up truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, according to APD.APD said this is Austin's 43rd fatal crash of 2023, resulting in 43 fatalities for the year. Anyone with information should call APD's Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111.
