Several South Florida cities hosted festivals for freedom in honor of the Juneteenth holiday.In Dania Beach, families on Saturday were treated to music, slides and a petting zoo before rain moved through the area.The celebration took place at C.W. Thomas Park along Northwest Eighth Avenue.Miami Beach also welcomed the community on Saturday to celebrate and honor the contributions of African Americans at the Soul Vegan Festival, held at Lummus Park.The event featured plant-based soul food and Caribbean dishes, as well as entertainment for children.Juneteenth marks the day when the last population of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned that they were free, back on June 19, 1865.22nd Mayor’s Ball in Miami expected to raise over $1M for United Way

SAN DIEGO -- One person is dead following a shooting at a Juneteenth event in Liberty Station Saturday evening that left another injured, the San Diego Police Department confirmed.According to SDPD, authorities were alerted to the shooting at the center's NTC Park around 6:45 p.m. Authorities say there was a dispute between attendees at the Juneteenth event held in the park, prompting an individual to pull a gun.Two people were struck in the shooting, SDPD said. The second victim was escorted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their current condition is not known at this time.It is unknown if an arrest has been made in the shooting. A description of the possible shooter has not been disclosed by law enforcement.The investigation remains ongoing. MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A Philippine ferry carrying up to 65 passengers and crew members caught fire at sea on Sunday and a coast guard vessel was deployed to rescue those onboard and try to extinguish the flames, coast guard officials said.The M/V Esperanza Star caught fire at dawn while traveling from Siquijor province to Bohol province in the central Philippines, the coast guard said. A gang member accused of kidnapping an infant in West Hills remains at large after the baby was found safe on Saturday night.The suspect was identified as Adonis Childress, 30, and the baby was identified as Jeremiah Montgomery, 11 months old, by the Los Angeles Police Department."Jeremiah has been located in good health and is with a family member of the victim," said LAPD. "The suspect, Adonis Childress, has not yet been located."Childress and the baby’s mother are in a dating relationship, authorities said.
