Popular 'low T' treatment is safe for men with heart disease, but doctors warn it's no youth serum

Testosterone replacement therapy is safe for men with “low T” who have heart disease or are at high risk for it, a new study suggests. But doctors warn the popular treatment is no “anti-aging tonic.”The research, published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that heart attacks, strokes and other major cardiac issues were no more common among those using testosterone gel than those using a placebo. That implies the gel is also safe for men without cardiovascular problems who have low T, said Dr. Steven Nissen, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic and senior author of the study. But, he added, it doesn’t mean the treatment should be used by men without low T — a condition also known as hypogonadism that’s measured by levels of the sex hormone in the blood.“What we’ve shown here is that for a very specific group of men, testosterone can be given safely,” Nissen said. “But it is not to be given as an anti-aging tonic for widespread use in men who are aging.” More than...NBA: Ja Morant suspended for 25 games for 'alarming' conduct

One of the shooting victims from this week’s violence in downtown Denver has had multiple surgeries and was facing more as he lay in an intensive-care-unit bed Friday with a tube draining fluids from his body, an example of how wanton gunfire in crowded streets spreads pain.A May graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, Keith Sablan, 24, had been hoping to become a financial advisor and work his way up in the banking and investing industry — an optimistic and resilient young man with ambitions, according to friends. Sablan went downtown Monday night to celebrate the Denver Nuggets’ NBA championship victory. He’s one of at least 10 people wounded — he was hit directly with three bullets, one shattering his lower leg — when a gunfight broke out with at least 20 shots fired amid a crowd of revelers shortly after midnight near 20th and Market streets. Police who chased down two suspects have said they believe the shooting was related to a fent...CU Boulder researchers discover new direction for treating ALS

However, when it’s overly abundant in the wrong places, it may also cause disease.“The fact that PEG10 is likely contributing to this disease means we may have a new target for treating ALS,” said Alexandra Whiteley, senior author of the study and assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry, in a news release. “For a terrible disease in which there are no effective therapeutics tha...Boulder City Council approves drafting partial moratorium on Police Oversight Panel’s work

Boulder City Council unanimously voted Thursday evening to approve the drafting of a partial moratorium on the work of the city’s Police Oversight Panel.“I know it’s been a difficult time for the POP in recent months with some of the challenges they’ve been experiencing. It’s been challenging for the community as well,” said Mayor Aaron Brockett. “I would like for us to formalize a partial moratorium so that they can focus on making those changes to the city ordinance.”Last month, the panel voted to suspend most of its operations after former panelist Lisa Sweeney-Miran was removed by City Council over allegations of bias. Panelists agreed that their priority was to make changes to the Police Oversight Ordinance, which governs the POP, and that they would stop considering new police oversight cases and other panel work not related to the ordinance for the time being. However, the panel has continued to review police oversight cases it had already committed to reviewing.A partial mor...Latest news
