Why the Lakers are barred from wearing their black uniforms tonight The Los Angeles Lakers won’t be allowed to wear their black “city edition” uniforms for Thursday night’s semifinal game against the New Orleans Pelicans in the NBA’s first in-season tournament.According to ESPN, the NBA has barred the black unis because they create a difficult contrast with the league’s specialized court at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, the site of the tournament’s final rounds. The Lakers (13-9) are 4-0 while wearing their black uniforms this season and would prefer to wear them for the semifinal game, league sources said.Instead, the Lakers will take the court in their gold "icon" jerseys.“When one Lakers player was informed the team wouldn't be allowed to wear black on Thursday, he replied, 'That's ass,'" ESPN reports.Milwaukee plays Indiana in the East semifinal. This initial in-season tournament is an opportunity for teams to hoist the league’s newest trophy, medals for each of the players on the champion team, along with bragging rights. There are also big financi...

What to consider before taking the second-home plunge

Published Mon, 16 Dec 2024 06:46:10 GMT

What to consider before taking the second-home plunge The no-going-back moment is etched in my memory. After four months of looking at beach condos, of flirting with the idea of a buying a getaway that we could also rent out, we finally had an offer in play. My husband, DC, and I were standing in the kitchen when our realtor — we call him Saint Bob — called to say that the sellers had accepted it.DC and I locked eyes. We mentally replayed all the discussions where we’d reasoned that this was the time, now that the kids were on their own, and while we were both still working. We’d rather have tried and been sorry, than never tried and wondered.I nodded. DC told Saint Bob to send the contract.Never mind that this was the first time in my adult, self-supporting life that I felt financially under control. I needed to mess that up.Saint Bob had taken us to see more than a dozen condos and sent links to many more to view online. Some were nice, but lacked an ocean view. Some had the view, but the complex was rundown. Some needed ...

Donald Trump returns to NYC courtroom for fraud trial By Jennifer Peltz and Michael R. Sisak | Associated PressNEW YORK — Former President Donald Trump returned to his civil fraud trial Thursday to spotlight his defense, renewing his complaints that the case is baseless and heaping praise on an accounting professor’s testimony that backed him up.With testimony winding down after more than two months, the Republican 2024 presidential front-runner showed up to watch New York University accounting professor Eli Bartov. The academic disputed the crux of New York State Attorney General Letitia James’ lawsuit: that Trump’s financial statements were filled with fraudulently inflated asset values for such signature assets as his Trump Tower penthouse and his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.“My main finding is that there is no evidence whatsoever of any accounting fraud,” said Bartov, whom Trump’s lawyers hired to give expert perspective. Trump’s financial statements, he said, “were not materially misst...

Sharks update: Throwing some cold water on Vlasic trade talk; latest on Barracuda’s Robins

Sharks update: Throwing some cold water on Vlasic trade talk; latest on Barracuda’s Robins It appears Marc-Edouard Vlasic will be in the San Jose Sharks’ lineup Thursday night when they play the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. In other words, Vlasic hasn’t been traded, and it’s unlikely he’ll be traded anytime soon.Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman mentioned in his “32 Thoughts” podcast earlier this week that he has “no doubt” that the Sharks want to move Vlasic, who had been a healthy scratch eight times in nine games from Nov. 16 to Dec. 3.But completing a trade is another matter. Vlasic’s contract carries a $7 million cap hit for this season and the next two and contains a modified no-trade clause in which he would only accept a move to one of three teams. The Sharks could of course go to Vlasic, 36, and ask him to waive that clause, like they did with Brent Burns, who had the same wording in his contract. Burns accepted a trade to Carolina, even though the Hurricanes were not one of his three teams. But even if that happens, the Sharks will likely have to retain p...
