Brighton Park residents file lawsuit against city, mayor over proposed migrant camp site

CHICAGO — Some southwest side residents are taking legal action against the city and Mayor Brandon Johnson over a proposed migrant camp site.As the city searches options to house migrants, several sites are being considered for future use.According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the vacant lot at 38th and California in Brighton Park will be used as a tent basecamp and could house up to 2,000 migrants.The Sun-Times also reports the city signed a lease with the property owners on October 26 and will pay them $91,400 a month to use the land.In a statement, the 12th Ward Alderwoman Julia Ramirez said, “The city did not inform me that a lease had been signed. I continue to be frustrated and disappointed in the administration’s lack of transparency with my community and am deeply concerned that a lease would be signed prior to a full environmental assessment taking place. SIDNEY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A Sidney man has been sentenced on child pornography possession charges, according to the United States Attorney's Office. As part of his guilty plea on September 13, Murray admitted that he possessed images and videos of child pornography across multiple devices and email accounts back in 2021. California Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol Friday. Jail records indicate Carrillo, who is also running for Los Angeles City Council in the 14th District, was arrested Friday morning around 1:35 a.m.According to the Los Angeles Police Department, Carrillo was taken into custody on the 6200 block of Monterey Road in Montecito Heights after officers responded to a report of a traffic collision.Citing law enforcement sources, the Los Angeles Times reported that two vehicles were struck by a third vehicle, allegedly driven by Carrillo, who had a "high blood-alcohol count."Carrillo, 43, was arrested and booked into the LAPD Detention Center.The State Assemblymember has represented the 52nd District in the California Legislature since 2017. The California Highway Patrol is receiving additional help from the federal government in its continuing efforts to reduce reckless driving, illegal street racing and street takeovers.The CHP has been awarded a $2 million grant by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which it says will be used to decrease the number of fatal and injury traffic crashes caused by the illegal and dangerous activities.The grant will bolster the more than $5.5 million that the CHP has already been allotted by the state government in these crackdown initiatives.A street takeover is seen in the area of Rosecrans and Atlantic avenues in Compton in 2020.
