Read more Letters to the Editor.Cameras can lowerspeeds, save livesRe: “California soon could have speed cameras” (Page A3, Oct. 8).Speed cameras ultimately could be a good thing.Lower speeds will mean fewer accidents, injuries and death. This was proved when 55 mph speed limits were in effect. Lower speeds will also reduce fuel consumption. But I question a couple of things in Heather Knight’s story. As tragic as they are, I think pedestrian injuries and deaths are sometimes a result of inattention (by both drivers and pedestrians) rather than just speed. As far as issuing fines to people who can’t afford them goes, “If you can’t afford the fine, don’t commit the crime.”Slow down. For a 5-mile trip on city streets, a 10 mph increase in speed only saves about 2.5 minutes.John DavisUnion CityEnding occupation onlypath to Israel peaceRelated ArticlesLetters to the Editor | Letters...

He added: “Let there be no doubt. The United States has Israel’s back. We’ll make sure the Jewish and democratic state of Israel can defend itself today, tomorrow as we always have.”The president coupled his unflinching defense for Israel with only a glancing reference to the suffering that innocent Palestinians are enduring from Israel’s barrage of retaliatory fire on the Gaza Strip, where the Hamas attack was launched. That hardline approach could prove more difficult to sustain going forward if...
